My Five Favourite Spots in Florence

Having lived in Florence since 2010, I know my way around here pretty well by now and I know what places manage to maintain a high standard throughout time. I’ve come to make a selection of places that I just know are always there when you need them; a good cup of coffee, a perfect gelato, a divine glass of wine or just really good pasta. These are my five favourite spots in Florence. What are yours?

Santa Rosa Bistrot

This place is really great when you just want to chill out and escape the traffic and noise from the city centre. It’s a green space that has been transformed into this cute, Berlinesque bistrot and it’s basically all outdoors. Grab yourself a sun chair, order a cappuccino and just aaahhh, enjoy la dolce vita! I love the design, the logo and the great service. It’s a bit out of the centre and therefore still mainly Florentine. They do breakfast, lunch, aperitivo, dinner and parties. I even had one of my meet ups for The YES Woman there once, which was fab!

Go check it out Santa Rosa Bistrot any time of day really at Lungarno di Santa Rosa.

Ditta Artigianale Oltrarno

So, this is basically my living room: I work here, I meet clients here, I take my friends and family here – and of course I have my coffee here. Its design is totally up my alley, the service is great and they always welcome me with an enthusiastic “Ciao Sophie!” The 2017 Barista Champion Francesco Masciullo works there, so the coffee is great – guaranteed! A cool detail is that I coached him to prepare for the competition – and he won! J My favourite coffee is their Mamma mia espresso, but their brews are great too. They produce all the coffee themselves and their passion for coffee is truly palpable! Brunch and lunch are good as well.

Tell them I said hi! You can find Ditta (as we locals call it) in Via dello Sprone (not to be confused with the one in Via de’ Neri, which is nice too, but I totally prefer this one since it’s my neighbourhood go-to place!)

Tamerò

This restaurant is situated in my favourite square in Florence: Piazza Santo Spirito. I love how they’re totally open about their cuisine; in fact, you can look inside their kitchen watch the chef make the fresh pasta with your own eyes! Since the square is full of rather touristy places (read: average quality), I’ve become pretty picky about where I enjoy my time off and this is definitely the one that offers the highest quality. Their menu is great, prices are fair and the interior is really original. In the evening you can also enjoy their freshly prepared aperitivo, sit outside and watch all the people flock by. This is where I take my family when they’re here!

Enjoy your pasta, pizza or aperitivo buffet at Tamerò. You can find them in Piazza Santo Spirito.

Il Re Gelato

The gelato king totally deserves this name. It’s by far the best ice cream shop in Florence. Since it’s a bit outside the city centre, only real aficionados take the effort to go there, which is great because you won’t have to stand in line like you at most ice cream places in the city centre. The Sicilian sweets are really to die for and the gelato really addictive. I never used to be a sweet tooth, but once I found this place there’s no way back. Absolute favourite flavour is Pistacchio. Try it and then tell me what you think!

Get your shot of dolce at Il Re Gelato, you can find them a short walk from the train station, close to the Fortezza in Viale Filippo Strozzi 8/red.

Enoteca Sei Divino!

This is my absolute favourite wine bar in Florence. I just love the atmosphere that they’ve been able to create offering a homely, yet classy feel where you can quietly enjoy a really good glass of wine. The bites they offer for the aperitivo are truly divine and range from fish, to meat to pasta; all freshly made. I’ve hosted many of my meet ups for The YES Woman here and the excellent service has really contributed to our sense of safety and feeling at ease to share our most intimate stories with each other. If you’re looking for style, good quality and really attentive service, then this wonderful wine bar in Florence is the place to be. They also offer outside seating, by the way!

Say ciao to the sommelier from me when you go to enjoy some divine wine at Enoteca Sei Divino! They’re located close to the city centre in Borgo Ognissanti 42/red.
